Theoretical introduction

Introductory classes on general subjects of membrane biophysics will be available online before the starting of the course.

Mandatory self-assessment questionnaires on the topics of introductory classes will also be available online.

Seminars

Theoretical lectures will be given online by specialists on the topics:

· Concepts on membrane lipids and biophysics
· Importance of lipids on pathophysiological processes
· Methods to evaluate drug partitioning
· Methods to evaluate membrane location
· Methods to evaluate membrane structural properties

Seminar I. Catarina Pereira-Leite

"“Hints from lipids to improve therapy"

Seminar II. Amália Jurado

“Membrane partitioning: quantification methods and biological relevance”

Seminar III. Liana Silva

“Fluorescence methodologies as a tool to investigate the organization and function of biological membranes”

Seminar IV. Luis Loura

“Molecular dynamics simulations of membrane models: fundamentals, methods and selected applications"

Seminar V. Conceição Rangel

“Electron paramagnetic resonance: principles and applications in biomedical science”

Seminar VI. Philippe Fontaine

“X-Ray sutdies of model membranes”

Seminar VII. Ibraheem Yousef

“Synchrotron-based infrared bio-microspectroscopy: Applications in biomedicine”

Seminar VIII. Christian Salesse

“Effect of protein lipidation on their binding to lipid model membranes”

Case studies

Discussion of case studies presented by tutors or suggested by participants.

A session will comprise the discussion of the experimental data obtained by all groups.

Case Study I. Cláudia Nunes

Case Study II. Catarina Pereira-Leite

Case Study III. Romeu Videira

Case Study IV. Salette Reis

Biophysical techniques

Participants will be divided in 3 groups (G1, G2 and G3).

All groups will attend BTI and BTII on monday, whereas they will be distributed by BTIII, BTIV and BTV, according to:

Practical sessions will be given by tutors on the topics:

· Dynamic light scattering
· Derivative spectrophotometry
· Electron paramagnetic resonance
· Fluorescence quenching
· Fluorescence anisotropy
· Langmuir isotherms
· Brewster angle microscopy
· Infrared reflection-absorption spectroscopy

Evaluation

The final grade of the course will be the weighted average of the grades obtained in the following assessments:

PRACTICAL SESSIONS REPORTS (25%)

A final report of each practical session must be filled by each group and submitted to evaluation until the end of the next day.

CASE STUDY EVALUATION (25%)

An oral presentation of a case study should be prepared by each group, considering the experimental and review papers that will be provided.

The presentation should last up to 20 min, followed by 20 min of discussion.

FINAL EXAM (50%)

The final exam will be available online..

The exam will consist of questions on topics discussed during Seminars, Case Studies and Biophysical Techniques.
